Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine how job stress and coping method varied according to the personality types classified by MBTI(Myers-Briggs Type Indicator).

Methods: The subjects were 312 clinical nurses working in a general hospital in Seoul. Data were collected through self reported questionnaire. The instruments used were MBTI questionnaires for personality types, Kim & Ku¡¯s study questionnaires for the job stress, Lazarus & Folkman¡¯s the way of coping checklist for the coping method. Data were analyzed by SPSS Win 12.0 program, and statistical method were frequency analysis, the independent t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficient.

Results: The distribution of the personality types of clinical nurses by preference was as follows: I(introversion) 55.8%, S(sensing) 92.6%, T(thinking) 65.7%, J(judgement) 71.2%. In the functional type, the ST type was dominant by 60.6%, and in the temperamental type, SJ type was dominant by 67.9%. Of all the personality types, the ISTJ type was the highest percentage by 28.2%. In the analysis of job stress by personality types, the job stress by personality types was not statistically significant different. But there was statistically significant difference in coping method by personality types. The coping method by preference demonstrating the statistically significant difference was E&I (t=2.19, p=.02), T&F (t=2.63, p=.01). In the examination of difference by functional type and temperamental type, coping method showed significant difference in statistics.

Conclusion: Based on this results that the coping method is different by the personality style, the development of various coping method by the personality type is assumed to be efficient to relieve the job stress in clinical nurses
